Proposed Reduction in 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has recently announced proposed changes for the 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) which will result in a 21.5% reduction in the Medicare allowable amounts beginning January 1, 2010. Because the CMS proposal is based on a “Sustainable Growth Rate” (SGR) formula that is codified in the law, CMS does not have the authority to make changes to the formula - only Congress can stop the implementation of these proposed reductions!
Over the last several years, Congress has intervened in the eleventh hour with legislation which has prevented CMS from implementing proposed MPFS reductions. PSA encourages you to contact your elected officials again this year to urge them to take action to prevent CMS from implementing the proposed 21.5 percent reduction in the 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.
