Alert: Medicare Scam
On June 19, 2009 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) became aware of a Medicare Scam where imposters are sending faxes to physician offices posing as the Medicare carrier or Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC). The fax instructs physician staff to respond to a questionnaire to supply updated account information within 48 hours in order to prevent a gap in Medicare payments. To enhance the appearance of authenticity, the fax may include a CMS logo and/or the contractor logo.
Medicare FFS providers, including physicians and non-physician practitioners, should be cautious of any requests described above in the manner above. Please check with your contractor first before submitting any information and only send information to a Medicare contractor using the address found in the download section of the CMS.gov website found at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MLNGenInfo/or http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MedicareProviderSupEnroll.
PSA has alerted all billing staff and are taking all precaution to ensure that patient information does not fall into the wrong hands.
We encourage you to contact your billing manager should you have any questions.
