NPI Results in Significant Fluctuations in Cash Flow
On May 21, 2008, the Healthcare Billing Managers Association (HBMA) delivered a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary addressing concerns regarding NPI implementation timeline. In the letter, HBMA expressed its concern regarding the ability of clearinghouses and commercial insurance payors to meet the May 23rd deadline and suggested extending the timeframe. Other supporters of the proposed delay, including the American Medical Association and 36 other national medical organizations, have also drafted letters to the HHS Secretary urging him to take all appropriate steps necessary to ensure that the industry does not experience wide-scale disruption in claims processing and payment.
PSA has been submitting test files using NPI numbers, without legacy information, to payors who are prepared, and correcting NPI Crosswalk issues for affiliated practices by editing provider's NPI profiles.
While PSA's proactive approach to this issue has ensured our readiness, many payors remain unprepared. As a result, pathology practices may have already experienced significant fluctuations in claims processing and collections which may continue over the next few months.
PSA will continue to work with payors and keep our affiliated practices updated on the issue.
